CHAPTER ELEVEN

Three days later, I woke up in King Jacob’s bed early in the morning. My first thought was that I had dreamed everything that had happened during the days before: my experience in the ritual room, being escorted into King Jacob Napletoni’s throne room, and last but not least, how busy Jacob had kept me for the last few days.

And how utterly, completely happy I felt.

I looked over at Jacob as he slept. His thick chest rose and fell with every deep breath he took. Sleeping, he looked a little like Brad Pitt with darker skin and a couple of tattoos, kind of like Brad Pitt’s character in Snatch. Wasn’t Brad Pitt a little short though? Jacob was big. Maybe 6’5”. Yeah, I guess Amy was right. He was more of an Alexander Skarsgard body type, long, lean, and toned. I laughed at myself, thinking that if my biggest problem was whether my boyfriend was too big to look exactly like Brad Pitt, things were actually going pretty well for me. For once.

I had to pinch my arm again to remind myself that this was all real. I had started this journey with a simple wish to see the town where my father, had traveled to. And now the entire trajectory of my life had changed.

It was possible that I wasn’t going to be a paper-pushing office worker anymore. I was a queen, mated to the king. At least . . . I was pretty sure we were “mated.” But I was still figuring out how all of the details worked out here in the kingdom of the Jarona. Was “being mated” like a trial period, aka what back home we would consider “dating”?

It had all happened so fast. Would I just stay here forever?

I had barely had time to sneak out to see Amy for a few minutes here and there, Jacob had kept me so busy during these three days. Fortunately, Shooter was apparently keeping her busy.

An orange-yellow light was beginning to shine through a window into the hut. The sun hadn’t broken the horizon yet, but the first rays of light from the day to come were sneaking through. Jacob lay there with the covers clumsily covering his lower half. I grabbed my DSLR camera and pointed it at him. The natural light was perfect and I snapped a few shots.

There was something about his being the king that added to his overall aura, but the artsy side of me couldn’t help but notice how the gentle light perfectly accented his body. Just a few hairs sprang forth from his burly chest, enough for you to know that this was a man you were looking at, and not a boy. If he would come to the city with me, I bet I could make him into some kind of model.

After watching him maybe a little too creepily for a few more seconds, I poked the king. “Jacob.”

“Mmm,” he stirred.

“I want to watch the sunrise on the savannah.
